Company Fined £218,000 for Fatal Accident

January 7th, 2009

An accident involving a baling machine, which killed a Hook man, will cost a recycling company more than £200,000.

At a court hearing last week, Kingshill Recycling Centre admitted that they had violated health and safety laws, which directly led to the fatal accident. In August 2005, Paul McGuire had been using a baling machine, which was owned by Kingshill and located at Cricklade Centre. As McGuire inserted cardboard and paper into the machine, it became jammed. McGuire climbed upon the conveyor in an effort to clear the jam.

However, Mr. McGuire lost his footing and fell into the baler, which had not been locked. The Hook man was killed almost instantly.

Kingshill representatives had argued that McGuire had not been formally trained, nor was he formally authorised for use of the baler. Nonetheless, they admitted that the baler should have been locked, and the representatives accepted responsibility for the man’s death.

A spokesman for SITA UK, where the baler was run, expressed condolences to McGuire’s family and friends at the court hearing. When the proceedings were done, the judge ordered Kingshill Recycling to pay £180,000 in fines and £38,000 in costs.

Protect your company from these avoidable tragedies by training staff and management to NEBOSH General Certificate level with the assistance of the experts at Workplace Law.

How To Build A Web Site & Develop It’s Full Potential - Part One

January 5th, 2009

In a previous set of Articles published here at EzineArticles I discussed the implementation of RSS and how you could create an RSS feed for yourself.

These next few articles are going to be devoted to something a bit different. We will categorize it as Web Development and I will try and go through a case-scenario of building a web-site and everything you may need to know about doing it.

If you think that building a web-site is something simple and you can do it in one day, and you WANT THAT WEBSITE TO WORK, think again. I have worked in high-tech for many years, and the one thing these days I find incredibly funny, is all these promises that you can build a web-site in a day and be rich by next month. Realistically, that is not going to happen. Realistically, like any other business you want to succeed at this takes work and patience and luck. A great deal of work, the patience of an angel and the proverbial luck of the Irish.

First thing is first. Ignore all those emails you get that promise to make you rich in a week. Ignore any type of scheme that promises you advertisement to five hundred million web sites for $29.00. Ignore all those web pages with fanciful ebooks written by people JUST LIKE YOURSELF trying to make a buck by putting a few pages together in an Adobe PDF file. (Ask yourself this. How many people do you personally know that actually READ those ebooks? I still have not one found one person to ever admit to reading them!) Ignore anyone who tells you that they can show you the way to riches if you pay them $35.00 for their scheme. They are the ONLY ONES getting rich. Ignore it ALL. I know the temptation is great. After all what is $29.00. And of course they all promise you 30 money back guarantees. Don’t do it. Don’t think it. Don’t fall for it.

Let us complicate matters a bit more. It is simply not enough to build a web site and put it out there. I am sure most of you know that.

  • Content is KING - Don’t think that the phrase “content is king” is going to get you listed all the way on top either. Content is critical, but Google and Yahoo and MSN (the search-engine trinity) have created an incredible amount of new algorithms to decide just WHICH content is critical and which is not. CONTENT IS KING - but it must be content on your web site, NOT links to content on other web sites.
  • Linking to your web site from other web-sites is also critical.
  • KeyWords - Keywords, search terms etc.

All these are critical. But how do we get there? How do we go from an idea to the final production phase?

The one or two page web sites that contain content written by others and dropped into your web site are great if you have the ability to create say 500 subdomains and template each one. But guess what? Google has even found a way around that. You may achieve high rankings for a couple of weeks, and then you will have need of some serious meds as you watch your web rankings go to the gutter.

Before delving deeper into all these problems and many, many, dare I repeat, MANY more, realize that a truly functional business web-site these days should or may contain the following:

  1. Web Site itself
  2. Blog Connected to the Website
  3. Forum Connected to the Website
  4. Perhaps even a Wiki connected to the Website

Each of these has its up and downs. Each one of these demands work and dedication. Each one of these demands that you invest time and effort (and I will attempt to show you how to save a great deal of money as well.)

Now you have your head on right and your thoughts centered let us understand what goes into building a web site that will attract visitors, make sales, keep customers coming to you, and stay somewhere near the top of the search engine ratings. Notice I did not say the top, but near the top. Of course, you can get on the top as well. That happens to be easy. Just join Adwords and Overture and advertise. (By the way that is not a bad idea for creating initial traffic.) But in these articles we are going to avoid the funds layout proposition as much as possible.

Now, I know what many of you may be thinking. He is talking about a full-blown web site. All I want is a three page web site so that I can offer some product, maybe have some affiliates and voila everyone will buy or click on my affiliate or Google Adsense advertisements.

Maybe that will happen to you. There are some people out there that do make an incredible amount of money from Google Adsense. That is a fact. But they know how to build their web sites and they know just how to attract customers or “eyeballs” as it is called. And getting those “eyeballs” where you have on the average of less than 7 seconds to interest someone is difficult. That is right 7 seconds!

To end this first article I will simply quote an email the I received from EzineArticles itself.
In it we were told that the article entitled “Want to Try on That New Hair Style Before You Get It?
had 108,898 page views! Now if you would have asked me which article would get such page views, I would certainly have NEVER even considered an article about “hair”.

The Internet is full of surprises. ONLY because the human condition is full of surprises. Only because it reflects who we are and what our society is like. Building a web site which works is a reflection of your intuitiveness, resourcefulness and understanding just what people want and how to give it to them. It is very much like building a company.

Now if you will excuse me I am going to go write an article about how I tease my white hair and keep it from falling out.

When NOT To Invest In An Online Business

January 5th, 2009

A friend of mine, Joe (not his real name) recently asked for my opinion about investing in an online business. He had found this “fantastic” money making opportunity on the Internet. Joe was thinking of investing a substantial amount. All he had to do for this “online business” was view a couple of websites a day and he would be paid a percentage of his investment every month. He said some people were making thousands every week! When I heard this, red lights flashed in my mind and they were screaming “SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!”

When he had finished telling me about the “investment”, I asked him two questions: “Don’t you think it sounds too good to be true and have you done any background research into this?” Joe said he did do some checking and although he found a fair bit of criticism about this “investment” on a couple of online forums and chat rooms, he was still willing to invest and see if it worked. I then asked, “Joe, you sound desperate. Is everything OK with your business?” The truth finally came out. Joe’s business had folded about a month earlier and YES, he was desperate. I advised him to hold on to his money - that he would need all his money to help him and his family through the tough time ahead. I offered walk him through starting an online business if he really wanted to - just not this particular one.

This wasn’t the first time someone had asked me about such “investments” when they were in the midst of a crisis. Desperate people resort to desperate measures. It’s so very easy to believe what you read on the Internet. The web is filled with millions of sites that guarantee you riches if you will just make a “minimal investment”. The cold, hard fact is that there are many irresponsible internet marketers out there who prey on the weakness of desperate folk, getting them to part with their money - which is a precious commodity when you’re jobless - to make themselves rich.

Most people fail to realize that in many ways, an online business is like a regular business. It takes time and effort to build it into something successful. It definitely does not happen overnight the way many internet marketers would have you believe. After all, if they told you the truth - that it DOES take time and effort - would you part with your money so easily?

Here are some examples of when you should AVOID investing in an online business:

*When you’ve just lost your job or source of income. The sense of desperation leads many into rash decisions that they soon regret and they are left much poorer!

*When you’re all hyper after discovering that one-in-a-million opportunity which needs your response A.S.A.P because “places are limited”.

*When you’ve had a bad day at the office, and you’ve been grilled by your boss and you want out - NOW!

*When you read or hear someone tell you how “easy” it is to make tons of money on the internet and they want you to join them - NOW!

*When you suddenly find yourself in a financial crisis.

*When you’ve just quarreled for the thousandth time with your wife about money.

You get the message - DON’T invest in an online business when you’re emotionally charged. That’s exactly what internet marketers WANT you to do! I know it’s hard to do but channel all that energy and frustration into research instead. Do it as if your life depended on it - and it probably does. Be ruthless in your fact-finding. Be objective in what you read and hear. Be merciless in rooting out potential SCAMS. Give yourself some breathing space, do your homework and when you find an online business that you are confident about, JUMP IN! Go into it with all your heart and don’t stop till you’ve reached your goal!

Until then, I’ve said it before and I’ll keep on saying it - the Online Business Pie is growing everyday. There is ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE plus more to spare! It’s not going to just disappear one day so don’t worry. When you’re ready, you can dig in and enjoy your slice of the pie too - Cheers!

Learning about Gambling Pastimes Gamblers Enjoy Playing: Gaming Hall Taking Chances

January 4th, 2009

If you haven’t grasped gaming room gaming, then feel free to read on —

A description of a betting establishment is a construction that features gambling. At such a place, guests may test their luck at the coin-operated machines or trying out alternative betting games. Betting room games habitually have well calculated likelihoods incorporated which promise the gambling house preserves a leverage over the gamers.

Countless betting hall games can sway you into getting overly habituated very quickly. Take, for example, the good old 1-armed-bandit, a coin operated instrument with 3, sometimes more drums which spin once an arm coupled to it is operated. The gadget mostly settles referring to a range of symbols discernible on the screen of the instrument. Sadly, betting house games offer a misconception of supremacy, thereby conning the player: the punter is given over alternatives, but actually these don’t compensate for the customer’s overall disadvantage. That is induced by the betting hall never refunding the full wager as expected. This systematic arrangement is continuously noticeable in well-known casino games like five card stud poker, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Five card stud poker is really an immensely trendy casino pastime. The customers, closely guarding their either fully or partially hidden cards, will bet in a central pot that is finally bestowed onto the winning gamester endowed with winning combination of cards. (And as eveyone knows, the shameless bluffing hand can win)

gambling gamble

Quite like straight poker, blackjack is likewise a highly trendy casino game. Most of its appeal is caused by its peculiar mix of luck and competence and decision making, as well as a process dubbed “counting”. The aforementioned is an approach by which gambling devotees can bend the winning odds of the game to give them the upper hand by both betting and strategic actions in correlation to the hands shown.

Craps is a very popular wagering game involving the throw of 2 dice. Aficionados bet on the outcome of of one roll, or on a string of cycles on two dice. Contrary to blackjack, there can’t be a possible winning strategy people could profit from to beat the odds.

Roulette is a famous pastime: a croupier revolves a roulette wheel which has a set of thirty seven (as in classical roulette) or thirtyeight (Vegas roulette) differently tagged divisions in which the ball will come to a stop, thus defining the final winning number and the other chances that will always go along with it. Whenever a gamester has put money on a specific number and is successful meaning it is indeed lucky, the guaranteed repayment will be thirty five to 1, the initial wager itself will be rebated. Hence in totality the wager itself is multiplied by thirty-six.

2005 - The Year of Patience

January 4th, 2009

2005 has me going into my 15th year teaching golf. From day one, I thought that if I could come up with a technique that was fast and easy to learn I would be a pretty popular guy. Well, I did … and I am. So what is fast and easy? Does it mean that if you take one lesson with me I can get you to shoot 72? Well … if I could get you to shoot 72 in 1 lesson I would charge $10,000 per lesson and the line up to see me would be down the street. I do get lucky sometimes but for the most part it usually takes me a little longer.

Typically, I say that I can give you a pretty good swing in 5 lessons, a great swing in 10 and a phenomenal swing in 15. That’s 1 lesson per week for that length of time with practice in between lessons. Considering it took me over 10 years to develop a swing I was happy with, it seems like such a small price to pay. Unfortunately, many people won’t wait that long. It’s not because they don’t have time it’s just that they want results immediately.

The funny thing, is that people don’t bat an eye at the length of time it takes to learn how to play a musical instrument. They know before they even start that it takes years to be able to play a song half decently. How about learning a new job? Training is going to take you up to 6 months. How about other sports? Other sports take a while to get good at but you’re OK with it. So what’s so different about golf? Well … there are many reasons. Maybe you want to impress your friends. Maybe you want to take some money off of your friends on the weekend. Maybe you hit that one brilliant shot and you think you should be able to do it all of the time. Maybe you just think golf looks like a simple sport. Whatever the reason, creating a great golf swing takes some time.

If you’ve played golf for 15 years and you still shoot in the mid to high 80’s or 90’s the first thing you have to realize that the golf swing you are using doesn’t work. If you played a guitar for 15 years wouldn’t you be able to give guitar legend, Eddie Van Halen, a run for his money? Now, I’m not saying you should shoot 72 every time you go out but after playing for 15 years shouldn’t you be able to shoot in the 70’s regularly? Knowing that you have a golf swing that doesn’t work is the first step to playing the best golf of your life.

The second step to playing the best golf of your life, is knowing that if you decide to change your swing, it will be like starting all over again (but this time it won’t take you that long). Initially, changes to your game will cause you to hit some very poor shots. This is because you’re learning a totally different way to swing. You are un-learning years of bad habits. It is this critical moment in time that you must decide to press on. No matter how bad your game gets … the future is bright.

The third thing you must do is practice. You have to ingrain your new movements until they are second nature. The best way to make changes is to do consecutive repetitions. What I mean is you have to do the same new movement time and time again. If you do consecutive repetitions of the new movement you will master it faster than if you do old swings in between. In the early stages it’s all about making the changes. The faster you can change the faster you will get better.

The fourth thing you have to do is work with a qualified instructor. This does not mean taking 1 lesson. You have to find a teacher that teaches a method and stick to it. I, myself, have a vision of what I want the students swing to look like before we even start. There are certain steps that must be followed to get to this end goal so no matter what it takes, see it through. Some people learn faster than others but with a few weeks you will get used to the changes and you will see some amazing shots. This is the sign of things to come in the future. Keep at it and keep practicing and you will soon reach your goal.

The final thing you have to do (if you haven’t figured it out yet) is have patience. It takes time to change you swing. Work hard in 2005 and pretty soon you’ll be breaking 80.

The Five Concept Golf Swing Principles

January 3rd, 2009

The discovery of the five swing principles is a real breakthrough for golfers. They not only define the golf swing and the athletic motion used by all ground based sports, but make all the positive effects every golfer wants in their swing to happen automatically.

I want to talk about how the Concept Golf swing principles create the swing positions that make high quality shot-making common place rather than an accident. It occurs to me that I know and understand the connection between the principles and the positions that cause excellent, consistent shot-making but that it may not be so obvious to many golfers.

Today I am connecting the dots between one of those important positions and two of the Concept Golf swing principles.

One of the necessary positions for excellent ball striking is for the hands ahead of the club head and the ball as the club hits the ball. This is a truth-position for all clubs all the time. Especially the wedge, the putter, the 7-iron, the driver, the 3-wood, the 1-iron, the chip shot, the pitch shot, the sand shot and any other club and any other shot you can think of.

ONLY with the hands ahead of the club head will the ball be struck squarely and fairly. If the club head ever gets ahead of the hands during the swing, many unpleasant results can be expected. Such as: fat shots, crooked shots, very short shots, high aimless shots, shots that no one could love.

As an example, did you ever try to make that little wedge shot near the green only to have the club get some dirt before it got to the ball? The resulting shot is a short dribbler causing an occasional utterance of golf words.

What caused that manly shot? The club head got ahead of your hands. That made the bottom of the arc before the ball rather than beyond the ball. We could focus on what caused the poor shot or what’s wrong with this swing, but we are going to focus on the truth that will eliminate that ugly little shot from your quiver forever. OK with you? Good. Let’s go on.

The Concept Golf swing principles are only five, but none can be ignored. Remember, too, that your job is to understand them, not just try to specifically apply them. Only through understanding will they seep into your being and your swing in a way that lets you benefit to the maximum. The only way you can reach your ball striking goals is to express these principles in your own unique way. That is the only way you can have your own authentic swing, your own homemade swing.

Having your own authentic swing is a way good thing for many reasons. Have your own swing - don’t copy someone else’s swing.

What principles are involved in the hands being ahead of the club head at impact? Just these two, weight transfer and shoulder relaxation. And if I was to put emphasis on one of the two - and I’m going to - it would be RELAXATION. (Didn’t mean to raise my voice.)

I will usually demonstrate relaxation when I am teaching new students. The way I do this is to hit a few shots with my shoulders relaxed to the point of ridiculousness. My arms appear to be uncontrollable string at best. My shoulders are so relaxed that it’s not possible to even sole the club behind the ball before I swing. The students are usually quite amused while I’m preparing to make the swing. They KNOW there is no chance to make any kind of a reasonable shot with that much relaxation.

The look on their face after the first shot is total bewilderment. How in the heck could you have hit a shot that good, that solid and that straight with arms made of rubber bands?

That’s the amount of relaxation that is NECESSARY for high quality, consistent shot making.
When your shoulders are that relaxed, how can you have a backswing?

The ONLY way is to let the legs make the body move so your arms will be flung or swung in what we know as the backswing. That is to say that the complete shoulder relaxation necessitates the weight transfer to cause the swinging of the arms and the club. Other wise you will be standing still at the address position with very relaxed shoulders. Not a very effective method of good shot-making.

When your shoulders are completely relaxed during the entire swing, the club head at the end of the stick actually has some weight. Because of the complete shoulder relaxation your arms have become followers of your body. Both of these effects are good. Now with your arms following your body and the weight of the club head sufficient to cause the club head to follow the hands and arms, you are going to move your body to the finish. At impact your hands will be well ahead of the club head. GOOD SHOT!!!!!!

As you can see, it is only through relaxation of your shoulders and the needed weight transfer of your body that you will ever be able to have your hands leading the club head at impact and enjoy the resulting crisp, solid shots.

Trying to create the “hands leading at impact” through muscular activity or a sense of swing control will NEVER work. I mean never. I have tried it so many times and so many ways that I can tell you absolutely that it can’t work except through complete and trusting shoulder relaxation. The Concept Golf principles work and they will cause the correct positions to be automatically created without any conscious thought on your part. That is the best possible situation.

When your shoulders are completely relaxed, your backswing will start with your legs and leave the club head behind the ball until the body finally drags it into the backswing. That’s exactly how the great Bobby Jones swung - and people didn’t understand it then either. As you start forward through the ball with your legs, your arms will be dragged through the ball to the finish. With that incredible relaxation at the top of your backswing, you will sense your arms dropping in behind your body as your body moves through to the finish. You will love the shots you hit!!!!!!

I hope this helps you understand the positive, desired effects the Concept Golf principles cause.

Winning Websites

January 2nd, 2009

Customers will form an opinion of your business as soon as
they look at your website. Therefore the same basic rules
apply that you use in the production of your brochure and
your business card - It needs to grab attention, be easy to read, have a benefit statement, be friendly and make a
statement about your business.

More and more potential customers will look at your website
to find out more about your product or service or even to
place an order. Here are some further points:

#1 Keep it updated - all information, prices and technical
details needs to be kept right up to date

#2 Easy to understand - just like your brochure, your
customers need to find what they’re looking for quickly and
easily

#3 Not cluttered - some websites try to convey too much
information and people just “click off” Remember the KISS
principle - Keep It Simple Stupid.

#4 Don’t get too clever - no fancy fonts and flashing
lights. People are fed up with sites that try to be
too clever. They’re designed by people who want to show how
clever they are and who aren’t really thinking about the
customer

#5 Fast loading - photographs and graphics can slow down
loading, so be aware. If customers can’t get to what they’re
looking for quickly enough, then they’ll “click off”

#6 Friendly - your website just like all your other
marketing materials need to suggest to the customer that you
are a warm and friendly organisation to deal with

#7 Call to action - every page of your website needs to tell
the customer what to do next - order something - phone for
more information - sign up for your newsletter

Easy-To-Read Web Pages Will Increase Sales (Revised)

January 1st, 2009

Web pages with readable text will generate more sales than fancy pages that are hard to read. Follow these design tips and not only will your web pages be easier to read, but you’ll keep potential buyers at your site and position yourself to increase sales.

Keep Pages Short — Especially Your Home Page

* Put important content at the top of your pages so it’s visible on the screen. Users may not scroll through lengthy pages. * In general, limit the length of a web page to two screens. * Split up long pages into several pages.

Layout

* Use left aligned text rather than justified text. * Write short paragraphs (4-5 lines). * Indent the beginning of each paragraph in sales letters. * Limit the width of your web pages to fit your visitors’ monitors. Your visitors don’t want to scroll left to right to see your content. * Keep the look, layout, navigation, typefaces, and colors consistent on all pages.

Break up Copy

* Break up long text with white space, color, columns, lines, and graphics. * Break up copy into easy-to-read sections * Use subheadings and bulleted lists to highlight benefits.

Colors

* Use color sparingly. Too much color can be distracting. * Select a background color that contrasts with the text color to make your content stand out. * Avoid blue backgrounds when using blue links (the standard link color). * Avoid dark backgrounds. Dark text on a light background is easy to read. * Avoid text on multi-colored background images. Such background images will decrease the readability of your text. * Use web-friendly colors. Colors that look bright on your monitor may appear dark on someone else’s and make your message unreadable.

Typography

* Limit the use of small type, reverse type (white text on dark background), and italics. * Avoid using UPPER CASE in your body copy. * Limit the number of fonts in a web site to a maximum of three (proferably only two). * Use a type size that is geared to your target audience. For instance, use larger type for older readers. * Emphasize important words, headlines, and sentences by using color, bold, and different text sizes. But do so sparingly. Too much bold or color reduces the impact. * Avoid underlining. Readers might think your underlined words or sentences are links. * Use standard fonts such as Arial, Verdana, and Times New Roman. If you’re using fonts your viewers don’t have on their computers, their browesrs will substitute those fonts and your web pages will look different on their computers than you intended them to look. * Avoid special characters like curly quotes, curly apostrophes, n-dashes, and m-dashes. These characters may convert into bogus characters on web sites. * Use fonts that are appropriate for your subject matter and your audience.

Images and Graphics

* Use images and graphics that support your sales message. * Keep animation, blinking text, and scrolling text to a minimum. They distract the reader from focusing on your text.

Check Your Pages

Web pages may look different on your visitors’ computers, depending on their computer, monitor, browser, and fonts. What may look great with one browser may look unprofessional with another. View your web pages with different browsers, computers, platforms (PC and Mac), screen resolutions, and settings. Statistics indicate that visitors use a wide variety of browsers and platforms.

Keep visitors, prospects, and buyers at your site with easy-to-read, interesting content. An easy-to-read, professional web site can maximize your sales. Apply these techniques now.

Cricket: Pakistan Tour to Australia (an Abstraction):

January 1st, 2009

Australia is the current world champions in one day international and also leads the test teams of the world. Recently Australia played India and new Zealand and won both the series Comprehensively and now it is playing new Zealand in the one day internationals.

Pakistan team on the other hand is ranked in the middle of the world test ratings and most of the players in it are new and young and due to that they have less experience as compared to Australians and have to work hard in the series to win it. But it is not easy for the Pakistani team to not only play well but also beat Australia as many of the players in the Pakistani team is young and less experienced.

Pakistan is touring Australia after 2 years and in which Pakistan will play Three Tests and a trination one day international series in which west Indies will be the third team.

The test series will start from 16th December 2004 to 6th January 2005, and the one day series will be played from 14th January.
These were some fixtures and details about the Australian and Pakistani team after that the current positons of both the teams are discussed .
Australia as we know is the best team in the Cricketing world have world class batsmen namely Ricky Pointing , Adam Gilchrist , Mathew Hayden, Darren Lehman etc . and bowlers are Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie , Shane Warne etc.

However the Pakistani team which is very new and young side are based on only Inzamam ul haq , Yousuf Yohanna Shoaib akhtar Mohammad Sami , Abdur Razak and Shoaib Malik. There are some youngsters also in the Pakistani team which are proving to be promising namely Salman butt . Danish kaneria, which is the only specialist leg spinner in the team the whole team depend on him in the spin department though shoaib malik gives him good support but surprisingly Shahid Afridi is also selected in the test team on the bases of his previous good performances against Austraila in Australia.

In the end it is concluded that Pakistan team would have to work really hard and not only the coach and captain would have to work hard but also all the players new players should work harder in order to face the challenging Australian bowling attack and batting department.
