Cricket: The Global Development of Cricket

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Cricket is a sport of English origin, which has become increasingly influenced by international interest. As commercial opportunities have arisen, the sport has made itself more appealing to its followers.

There is evidence to suggest cricket was played, in some form as long ago as the 11th century, but it was not until 1646 when the first organised game took place for a bet of twelve candles.

Cricket continued to develop for another hundred years or so without any standard written rules. The earliest laws of the game were formally composed in 1744. Although it would be another 43 years before any central governing body existed. In 1787 Marylebone Cricket Club (more commonly known as the MCC) was set up at Lord’s Cricket Ground to protect the standard laws of cricket.
The MCC was to be the international guardian of cricket for another two hundred years and it is still to this day, the copyright holder of the “Laws of Cricket”.

Despite its previously strong English history, the first international cricket game was between the USA and Canada in New Jersey in 1844. The MCC later adopted a policy to encourage the global development of cricket – particularly in British colonies, where the sport was becoming increasingly popular.

The first international game played by England was not until 1877, when James Lillywhite captained a side that travelled to Australia and lost at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The event was a tremendous success and arrangements were hurriedly made for a rematch, which was won by England. This lengthy format of match (typically lasting five days) was to become “test cricket”.

Australia played a return match in 1882 and defeated England at the Oval. It was seen as a national shame and a mock obituary appeared in The Sporting Times the following day. It announced the death of English cricket, infamously stating “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. This later spawned an ongoing battle between the nations for ownership of these fabled Ashes.

Regardless of the national team’s failure at that time, domestic cricket in England continued to thrive. And eventually, in 1890 the inaugural County Championship took place, comprising eight regional teams.
It had expanded to fifteen teams by 1900 and with the addition of Northamptonshire (1905) and Glamorgan (1921); the competition was attracting interest across England and Wales. The county championship had no fixed setup until after the Second World War. In 1968 a format was agreed that stayed in place until the 1990s. By this time county cricket was in disarray; teams were getting into debt as crowds sharply declined.
After the addition of an eighteenth county, a two division championship was set up to remedy the problem of diminished interest, but this did little to help the crumbling county game, which still struggles greatly as gate revenue fails to compensate for overheads.

However the tale of the international game is very different. England and Australia began to play against other countries. South Africa became an official test cricket nation in 1888. West Indies, New Zealand and India followed in the years after World War One. Pakistan became a test nation when they split from India in 1947.

From then on no major changes occurred in international cricket, until 1970 when South Africa were suspended for their government’s policy of apartheid.

The following year, a one day match was trialled between Australia and England. This form proved to be more attractive than test cricket, since then one-day-international series have regularly accompanied headlining test series between all nations. A regular World Cup now takes place every four years as a one-day-international tournament.

In 1993 came the biggest sign of the shift in world cricket – the MCC handed over global authority to the International Cricket Council, whilst allowing the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) to handle domestic affairs. Regardless of its decline, it still holds the copyright to the Laws of Cricket.

Today the ICC fully controls world cricket and the game’s new power base is arguably India; a country of one billion inhabitants where cricket is the sole national sport, but growth is global; Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh have all gained test status in the past quarter of a century and South Africa were reinstated in 1991.
Cricket is continuing to flourish in more and more countries and with the teams choosing to employ more attractive tactics; the sport’s future has never looked more prosperous than it does now.

Internet Conference Calls Offer Opportunities to Slash Unneeded Travel Expenses

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Oil prices are climbing and as a result, business cash holdings are spread short worse than even in the 1970s. Considering our global economy lumbers along slowly and credit stays rare, intelligent decision makers know additional expenses should cut. Executives everywhere need to make a few calculated choices to shrink costs. Perhaps the best way to reduce company costs is to make slashes in frivolous travel allocations, and the secret is web conference calling.

Web conferencing calls grant anyone to communicate with clients wirelessly in a conference in a far away city, in a far off state or especially in a distant shore. Typical Internet conferencing make use of revolutionary web video technology. Due to the fact that they are delivered over the net, they merely consume no additional organizational overhead. By going to the web, can a business person have a distant meeting from almost any office offering an Internet connection. Its not just easy as a computer and an Internet connection, it can slash travel expenses by thousands.

Break throughs in communications technology make online conference calls affordable for people to exchange presentations and information in real time. Internet conference members can hear and see others as though they were really there, despite the fact that on the other side of the earth. The look and sound of the presentations audio and video can be crystal clear due to the top in web architecture.

Obviously just about any business would reduce expenses by switching to online conferencing calls rather than wasting thousands sending an executive on a long-distance trip. Your company doesnt have to waste money on transportation costs, hotels and meals. These savings matter over a year. Any trip not taken translates to higher efficiency for a company. Most everyone knows that many companies are deciding on online conference calls to reduce expenses on low-priority business travel.

Prepackaged Shopping Cart Software: Upgrade Your Site

Friday, February 27th, 2009

No matter what you decide to sell online, you will most likely need shopping cart software to make your site user friendly and easy to purchase from. Allowing your customers to add the items that they’d like to purchase and check out right from your site makes purchasing much easier for the internet consumer and will help increase your sales. Ensuring the safety of your customer’s information and giving them piece of mind will make them want to return to your web store. Choosing the right shopping cart software can be a chore, however.

There are many different shopping cart software packages available, ranging from reasonable to extremely expensive in price. They all do the same thing, though, and this can make it hard to choose between products. There are many pre-packaged applications on the market today, so spare yourself the time and frustration of having one created, or trying to write one yourself.

Prepackaged shopping carts also have the advantage of having all of the kinks worked out by earlier customers. Most are ready to be added to your website and will function perfectly right away. No ironing out the “bugs” and no mistakes with your customer’s orders!

First, determine what capacity you’ll need. How many orders per day or per hour do you hope to achieve. Plan for expansion and growth, but don’t invest in a ridiculously large cart for a small website. There are reasonable applications that can handle your sales volume just as well.

Will you need to calculate sales tax and shipping charges? Make sure that the software you choose can accommodate these needs. Also, make sure that the shopping cart software you choose offers a wide variety of payment options. Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Paypal and e-checks are all available. Decide which you want to use and look for appropriate software. Remember, the goal is to make it as easy as possible for your customer to buy from you. Offer whatever payment methods you are comfortable with, but give your customer choices.

Make sure that the payments are processed in real time. This is where the credit card or account is authorized immediately. This will reduce the chances of you shipping items to a customer whose card is later declined. With today’s payment processing systems, this is easy to afford and an absolute must.

Finally, consider a shopping cart with some added features. Some can be programmed to offer additional items that may be of interest to your customer during checkout. For example, a customer who has just purchased a new set of cookware from your site may be offered a matching utensil set designed for use with the cookware’s coating. Or, the customer may receive a coupon for their next purchase.

You may even want to have an auto responder that asks the customer if they want to join your newsletter and be notified of specials. This can bring repeat business to your site and increase sales.

Whatever shopping cart software you choose, investigate the customer service record of the company you’re buying from. Any downtime translates directly into lost revenue, so you’ll want them to be ready to help you 24/7 if your cart software stops working.

Consider a prepackaged shopping cart software program for your online site or web store. You’ll be surprised how the convenience an safety of your new software improves your sales, and your online image.

The Best Technique to Lose the Big Stomach

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Did you wake up one day and look at yourself critically? Feeling that your potbelly is spreading out or just pointing due south. Is buttoning those trousers getting harder and harder? Are you figuring out that the wasted, horizontal TV time, going through snacks and chugging six packs has finally done you in, and you are sporting love handles? Have you lost your six pack abs(six-pack–abs.net)? Don’t worry too much. There are others in this six pack crisis and there is hope.

If you want definition in your abs you should start some ab exercises (http://ab-exercises.org). It matters not if you are a man or a woman, you can do better from a stronger back. When you tone up one you strengthen the other. There are simplified exercises to get rid of the love handles, such as sit ups and crunches.

With a focus on the lower back try lying on your tummy. Do the leg swim motion by gently kicking with knees and feet off the floor. Do repetitions of 15 seconds action, resting 30 seconds.

It is probably a great idea to trim the salt in your meals. We are inclined to link up sodium and sodium heavy foods with heart problems and stroke. Sodium also results in water retention which can make love handles look even worse. Avoid processed foods and adding extra salt. A fat tummy can also be reduced by drinking water. Water helps in breaking down stored fat, producing energy and also hydrating the body.

You may deal with cutting back your alcohol intake as well. Yes, I know, we all are let down that alcohol is not a water replacement. Alcoholic drinks contain a lot of what is called empty calories which for men tend to get deposited around the gut creating excessive fat. No need to cut alcohol out altogether, just keep in mind how much you drink and reduce it; just as you would if you were observing what you eat.

Compassion Is Best

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Being compassionate will get you real far in life. If someone ever does you wrong, the best practice is to show compassion. They must have something going on in their life and the way that they deal with it is up to them. Being compassionate towards them will help them out the most. If you give back to them what they did to you then the cycle will continue, instead it is better to be understanding and do what you can to help them.

If someone has a flaw or something is just not right, then show some compassion. Put yourself in their shoes and view the world as they do. It feels so good to help people become happier and enjoy life more. If you are not overweight and someone else is, view life from the way that they see it, feel it, and then do what you can to help, you could give them a bottle of Acceletrim diet pills and start going on walks with them. There are many things that you can do to help people become better. If someone is struggling on the job where you work, put yourself in their shoes, maybe they are having issues at home or with some other aspect in life, take some time and find out what is going on and then practice compassion. Put yourself out there and help them because I am sure that at some point and time in your life someone has reached out for you and helped you.

Fly Fishing The Arkansas River

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

One of the finest attributes of the Arkansas River is its accessibility. Roughly 60% has public access and most of it is well marked along major highways. Traveling south from Leadville, you will pick up the river at the Highway 24 Bridge. This marks the beginning of over five miles of the Hayden Lease. The river here is a small, winding stream with willow lined banks. From this point, it begins to pick up speed and water from tributaries as it cuts through Brown’s Canyon between Buena Vista and Salida. Brown’s Canyon is without a doubt one of the most scenic wilderness canyons in the state of Colorado. The best access is by boat, launching at Fisherman’s Bridge and taking out at Hecla Junction. You can hike upstream from the lower end of the canyon at Hecla, however you must cross to the east side to access public land and that can be tricky except during low water. Once across, you can use the abandoned rail bed as a trail system and walk the entire canyon, stopping to fish pool after pool of productive water.

By the time the river reaches Salida, it has leveled in elevation and becomes a meandering, classic Rocky Mountain freestone river with wide gravel bars, boulder fields and deep runs accented with shallow pools and backwater eddies. For the next 50 miles, U.S. Highway 50 shadows the Arkansas, providing the most popular recreational access. From Salida to Texas Creek, fly fishers find easy access, wonderful habitat and great fish populations. From Texas Creek to Canon City, the river begins a gradual drop to the foothills. This stretch includes the Royal Gorge, which holds some nice fish, but is extremely difficult to navigate. The twenty miles from Texas Creek to the Gorge takes you through a beautiful granite canyon, complete with one of the largest Big Horn Sheep herds in the Rockies. This water offers excellent fly fishing during the spring and fall. During the summer, it is literally a water park because of the numerous Class IV and V rapids. I particularly like this section due to its close proximity to Front Range cities, and because it looks more difficult to fish, many newcomers pass it by. Actually, the fish here tend to congregate along the edges and outside seams, making shoreline hikes a nice way to spend a morning. The Arkansas in Canon City offers excellent fishing along 3.5 miles of improved river trail systems, called the Riverwalk. This water is public along the trail side (south side) and provides great walking, biking, and bird watching as well. The Riverwalk runs from the ninth street trail head to McKenzie Ave. on the east end of town.

The next fly fishing opportunity comes at Pueblo Reservoir and the tailwater below the dam. The reservoir itself can be excellent for Wipers, Crappie, and Bass. Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass regularly fall to float tubers, but a powerboat is necessary to effectively chase Wipers. The tailwater has just undergone a habitat improvement project. The selective placement of small and large boulders has created an efficient trout habitat where nonproductive water once existed. The DOW is considering a special regulation stretch of water, so in the future this tailwater could become even a more productive fishery, especially during the winter when so many other waters are locked in the grip of winter.

Even though the Arkansas is the number one whitewater rafted river in the lower 48, the use of McKenzie style drift boats is not encouraged after the river drops below 1000 cfs. During runoff and high water these boats generally work fine, but inflatables in the 13 to 14 foot range such as self bailers from Aire, Maravia, and Down River are the best. Personal pontoon craft in the 8 to 10 foot range navigate this river extremely well. To drift this river, understand your skill level and get a good river map. Launch areas are well placed from Granite to Canon City, giving you the option of short or long floats. Even if you use a boat, probably the best way to fish this river is to get out and walk/wade the boulder fields, rock gardens and long shorelines. Fish hold along shorelines primarily and a competent fly fisher can break the river down into smaller systems and work fish up close and personal. Wading can be dangerous in many places, so use studded boots and a wading staff. It makes sense to be prepared, since the Arkansas is one of those rivers that tempt us to wade “just a little further.”

Ninety-five percent of the time, I fish this river with a 9 ft. 5 wt. rod. Afternoons can be breezy, so wind penetration is a must. If you have an 8 ft. 4 wt., it should be perfect for fishing dry flies. One of this river’s assets is that it provides something for everyone; dry fly fishing, nymphing and streamer fishing can be effective most of the time. The Arkansas is not an early morning river. I find it fishes better from 9:00 AM till 2 PM, and 5:00 PM till just after dark. Large Browns didn’t get big by exposing themselves to the numerous predators along the drainage. A lantern and a short sink tip line can be a good combination for those who enjoy night fishing. I find it invigorating and extremely productive, but it does require knowledge of the streambed for wading safety purposes. Besides, all you need is a #8 Black Woolly Bugger – well, maybe two.

My Mistakes as a Web Design Newbie

Learn from them

Approaching retirement age I was made redundant last year and decided to create my first web site, initially knowing little about it. I hope that, by reading about my experiences, that I may save you both time and money if you ever find yourself in the position of wanting to build a site with little initial knowledge.

eBooks
I bought five or six ebooks on how to make my web fortune from the one-page web-sites that you see on the web. The prices ranged from $9.95 to $29.95. It would be unfair of me to say that they were of no use, as you can always pick up the odd pointer, or contact. However, with the benefit of hindsight I would not have purchased any of them. Instead there are free, better written books which give you at least the same pointers, and often have more substance. You can download from my web site, for free, two excellent books by Ken Evoy, which will provide you with a good basic knowledge to move forward. Don’t get carried away with the sales hype contained in some of these “get rich quick” single page sales letters that offer huge free bonuses and an imminent price increase.

Universities and colleges
There are various colleges and universities on the web which promise you the ultimate in web creation, site marketing, search engine optimization and much more, “all under one roof” They usually have libraries of “how to” books and membership is by monthly subscription with some offering a lower fee for the first month. Have a look, by all means, I looked at three and claimed my refund within the stated period. I found that I could obtain similar information offered for free with a little searching, and that what they really offered was convenience.

Web Design software
I initially purchased a web site building package for $69.95 and was soon disappointed by its lack of functionality. I then looked over the shoulder of a friend whilst they showed me the workings of a top-end product costing nearly $400.00 but I found it to be too complicated with too steep a learning curve too be quickly productive. I posted a request for help on the Warriors forum and there were more recommends for a particular product than any other. So I decided that my first web site would be a review of that product, which I would create as a trial, before I went on to build a site that would aim at generating income.

What should the web site be about?
Several of the books that I read suggested that the subject matter should be about something that you enjoy doing and therefore you will create your site with more passion and enthusiasm. Whilst this is sound advice I found that the need to create a trial site, which would force me to learn the basics, was more than a sufficient driving force.

Domain name & Web hosting
Go for a dot com registration and pay no more than $10 per annum. Don’t go for free hosting, you get what you pay for. I looked at hosting sites that offered complete package with hosting, autoresponders, SEO and linking software and much more. Whilst everything was conveniently in one place they failed to convince me that each product would stack up well if they were competing in each niche market. I therefore opted for the best of breed approach and a little less convenience.

Search Engine Optimization
This was probably the subject that I was most worried about as I new that it referred to making a web site as easy as possible for the search engines to find, but I had no clue as to how to go about it. I have a free ebook that you can download entitled “Search Engine Optimization Made Easy” which will give you the basics to carry out this process. The book is really a plug by the author of SEO software for his excellent product. I was fortunate in that the web design software I selected also, somewhat unusually, held my hand through this process, carefully pointing out page, by page, what I needed to do.

Article Distribution
I was aware that, in order to succeed, I should submit articles to the numerous Article Directories present on the Internet. There are two ways to do this. By purchasing one of the two major pieces of software to assist me in doing it myself, or to use a company to do it for me. I looked at each way and found that, whilst both software solutions cut out some of the tedious manuals tasks of submitting to over 150 directories, it was still time consuming. Having examined the market place carefully, discounting any company who charged for a fixed number of submissions, I opted for one who for a fixed quarterly fee would submit any number of articles.

Link software
Again, so that I would get more site traffic, I new that I should get other sites to link to mine and that I would have to manage those links and the emails back and forth etc. I initially started to design an Excel spreadsheet linked to Microsoft Word but decided that I would still have to create the links pages by hand. My advice is to obtain software which houses all your links in a searchable database, handles all of the emails, including template housing, and that automatically creates the HTML link pages for you.

Affordable Honeymoon in Hawaii

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Hearing a volley of shots, it takes us back to the place where used to be a naval base for the decisive battle in the American’s history: Pearl Harbor. As a large harbor it is not just famous for its heritage and essential part of the history, now it’s also a kind of scenic spot. For this, more tourists care about the location of the large harbor. Located in Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii makes world’s tourists know much more about city.

In Honolulu, there are blue and clear water, oceanfront hotels and wonderful beaches for you to have fun, party, diving or surfing .however, that are not the only things for tourists to enjoy themselves. Like the Pearl Harbor, there are still many other things can be alternatives like museums, attractions and the historic monument like Pearl Harbor keep the city more lively. Consisted by two parts, Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, the city is still more famous for it beach ,that’s why many newlyweds prefer to have the honeymoon there, not only for its seaside scenery.

I think for most new couples, they should have been deeply attracted by Honolulu hotels , where they could see the moans of winds from the ocean, white and sandy beaches crowed with different faces which give joys and laughter out, and the sunshine through French windows, this is the real destination of your real noisy world. Want to start your trip right now? Never wait for the next second! Being as a commercial and scenic place, it won’t be a problem to find hotels, you can get cheap and wonderful hotels near beaches or downtown. However, cheap airline tickets might not really easy to find , particularly in summer, the best time to visit the city, that would be a really hot line, so if really go there, you might find an agent or company to get more details, I know you won’t miss the fantastic collection resort.

How to Choose a Web Hosting Service!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

1. Support. Is there really anybody there? Send them a question by email and see how long they take to respond. You want to know if they’ll be there when you need them. Some offer 24-hour support and a few will respond quickly. Speedy customer service is rare and indicates a superior service. I think that this is the single most important consideration. Also, check out the quality of their online documentation.

2. Server performance. You want a server that is reliable and fast. There is a free tool available that allows you to evaluate this before making a decision! NetMechanic.com will measure the speed of access for all facets of access (network speed, DNS lookup, connect time, download time, and absence of timeouts). The “download time” statistic is the most important single item to compare. Collect your list of candidate hosting services and run side-by-side tests of all the candidates. Sample during peak and non-peak times for optimal comparison.

3. Are they familiar with the application you plan to use? If you’re planning to use a particular application that requires special setup parameters (such as Online Merchant, a popular online store), make sure your potential host is familiar with the application. Otherwise you may find yourself spending a great deal of time trying to figure out how to configure it – perhaps never succeeding!

4. Traffic allowance. Compare your traffic allowances. Some services give you a small limit on the amount of material that can be downloaded from your site each month and charge you large amounts when that limit is exceeded. Some offer huge traffic allowances (several thousand MB/month, where 1,000 MB = 1 GB) for the same price as others that limit you to a few hundred MB/month. Sure you probably need less than a hundred MB/month now, but why put yourself in a position where you have to move when your traffic takes off? Plan ahead and allow for growth.

5. Space. How much space do you expect to eventually want for your web site? Planning ahead can save you lots of money later. If you expect to grow, look for a place that offers sites of 100 MB or more. Some services offer 500 MB sites for less money than others that offer only 30 MB.

6. Features. Consider what features you want to simplify development of your web site.

-Do you want access to a cgi-bin so that you can install your own scripts? -Do you want many scripts pre-installed and pre- configured? -Do you want to be able to use Microsoft’s FrontPage? -Do you want autoresponders for email processing? -Do you want email aliases (automatic forwarding) so you don’t need to check email in more than one place?

7. Guarantee. With so many hosting services to choose from, why not choose one that offers a guarantee? Services that offer a moneyback guarantee are confident that you’ll be delighted with their service.

8. Cost. Look for hidden costs when comparing price.

-Do they expect you to pay for a long term in advance to get a good price? Choose one that doesn’t bait you with a low price that’s only available if you make a long-term commitment. -Will they handle the registration of your domain for free? -If you’re transferring an existing domain, will they submit the domain change to InterNIC for free?

Choosing an excellent service to host your web site doesn’t have to require luck. Knowing what to look for makes selection simple.

Good luck with your marketing and God Bless.

Selling Your Business – Don’t Underestimate the Value of your Company’s Web Site

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Business owners often contact us requesting an introductory meeting. They are contemplating the near to intermediate term exit from their business. The meetings generally have two major themes: 1. The beauty contest – they want to interview merger and acquisition firms or business brokers to evaluate their qualifications and process in comparison with other competitors and 2. Preparation for Sale – what should we be doing in anticipation of putting our company on the market?

One of the questions I ask on their first phone call is, “What is your Web Site address?” As a potential advisor, I want to go to their site and find out all I can about their business in preparation for the first meeting. If they respond that they do not yet have a Web Site, I already know what my top priority recommendation is in response to their questions on preparing their business for sale.

The spectacular growth of the Internet powerhouses Google, Yahoo, and Ebay should convince you that the Internet is dramatically changing the way America does business. Think about your own buying habits. It is so convenient to type in a few key words and have a world of choices presented on your computer screen. Try this simple exercise. Do a Google or Yahoo search of some key words or phrases that a potential customer of your business might use if they were searching for a vendor of your products or services. Does your web site come up? Click on some of the sites that come up on the first page of the search. Look at their Web Sites. Do you think they are getting additional business based on their search result success? Bet on it!

If you had asked me three years ago if I thought that a business owner would hire our firm based on finding us on the Internet, I would have said no. In the last quarter we have gotten two new engagements based on a client’s initial Internet search. It does not matter what type of business you run, you simply must have a Web presence. At the very least your company should have a Web Site consisting of “brochure ware”. That is very simple and inexpensive to implement. Brochure ware is simply taking your company’s collateral material and putting it up on a Web Site. If a buyer is evaluating several potential acquisitions, the absence of a Web Site will be perceived as a negative.

If you are able to integrate your Web Site into your customer service, ordering, order status, documentation, training, etc., (eCommerce) your investment could pay huge dividends when you sell your business. The new reality is that it is considerably more cost effective to conduct eCommerce than traditional commerce. The big payoff comes when potential buyers perceive your eCommerce initiative as scaleable. My translation of this over used term is that a large increase in sales can be accomplished with a small increase in fixed costs. Buyers pay for the potential you create in your business. Buyers make acquisitions to grow and if that growth can be accomplished with improving margins, your selling price will go up.

In real estate, the largest dollar for dollar return on investment for the home seller is their expenditure on landscaping. As a potential business seller, think of your investment in a Web presence in the same light.
