First Class Snowfall throughout the Alps

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Weve had just about 2m snowfall during the week. The snowfall was so deep that chairlifts were stopped, the local train has been finishing at Chamonix and not going up to Les Grands Montets. Several roads have been blocked and weather warnings released.

This is in direct contrast to a couple of winters past, when we experienced the unbelievably warm Jan conditions, earth showing on the mountainsides, and reports that climate change meant the finish of snowboarding in France. Highlighting this the OECDs study from winter 2006 warned that global warming would make ski holidays far too dear for a lot of holiday makers, with one 3rd of ski fields shutting with the melting of glaciers. Scientists insist that it is virtually impossible to assign these seasonal differences in the snow conditions to the effects of climate change.

We might be experiencing the worst recession in 25 yrs, and the pound has headed to new lows compared to the Euro, however the snowboarding is fantastic, and the last reservations highlight that people are keen to take of advantage of the excellent snow conditions and our luxury chalets are full. This winter is certainly the best in nine seasons, and a lot of skiers are saying that it’s the nicest skiing snow in 10 years.

All the same recall that this amount of snow means large avalanches risks.
