A Golf Story From The TPC Scottsdale

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

In a perfect world, every place would get as many sunny days as Phoenix, Arizona. I was fortunate enough to golf at one of Arizona’s better courses a couple of years ago, the TPC Scottsdale, home of the FBR Open. It was late May, 2003 which is when the tourism season winds down somewhat in Arizona because the summer is quite hot and the weather is starting to get better everywhere else.

Because we were part of a large group, we started on the 5th Hole, a 453 Par 4. My foursome all agreed we’d play from the Pro tees and measure up how we would compare to the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. I know, it’s a silly thing to do but we enjoyed it none the less.

The course was beautiful and in great shape. It’s amazing how the ball flies through the air in the dry climate of Arizona. I managed a 7 to start at 3 over after the first hole and followed that with a 10 on number 6. My partner wanted to give me an 8 there but I wanted to see what my real score would be so I kept it.

The problem I had on number 6 was the bunkers and this seemed to be the biggest difference with the TPC Scottsdale course compared to other courses I have played. I had a real problem with how deep they were so I knew I had to stay out of them for the rest of the game.

I actually managed to pull things together nicely (for me) and put together a string of 5’s but the best hole of the day was by far the 18th. This is a beautiful finishing Par 4 that starts with a carry over the water. You need about a 190 yard carry to clear the water and I hit my drive perfect, avoiding 2 of the dreaded bunkers on the other side of the water. I’ve never been known for my short game so I was happy with my second shot that landed safely just short of the green. Here’s where I usually gain a couple strokes but I pulled out a nice par with a short chip and an easy putt to finish.

At the end of the day, I was pleased to finish with a 103. Considering my 10 on number 6, I left knowing that I was within striking distance of breaking 100 which was where I usually shoot on an average day. Throw in the fact that I was using rental clubs and they had cold beer on a hot day, I can’t wait to go back and break 100.

The following year I watched the FBR Open from the comfort of my own home while the snow fell outside. As I watched Mickelson tee off on number 18 I thought of my shining moment where I pulled out the par and wondered how Phil would play the same hole. I can’t remember what Phil’s score was on 18 that day in 2004 but it was either a bogey or a double bogey so I had to smile to myself watching at home. Of course I don’t think I would have handled the pressure as well if I were there in the FBR Open but it was fun to play the same course as the best golfers in the world.

Golf Nutrition Is Not An Oxymoron – Listen Up

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Golf nutrition is still a relatively new concept. However, everybody knows that leading athletes in the NBA and NFL quite often have special diets and specific nutrition programs to help them perform at their peak.

The reasons who golf nutrition is still in it’s’ infancy in the golf game is easy to see. To start with nutrition in sports goes hand in hand with the training and physical exercise program for the particular sport. In golf, exercises are still a very new concept although many professionals have already embraced it as an important part of their golf game.

For years golf has had the image of being a leisure sport to be played by the rich and the sort of people who do not just carelessly break into a sweat. Then came golfers of the likes of the legendary Tiger Woods. For the first time in the sport, leading golfers were very young and extremely physically fit. Since then, the game has never been the same again and as exercise continues to take center stage golf nutrition has to grow alongside it.

Golf nutrition is usually part and parcel of a golf exercise program and is really designed to enhance energy and strength even as the exercise program works to build up the golfer.

The sort of golf nutrition that will become common will not be very different from what we see in other sports. The idea will be to have a diet of energy foods and foods that will help in building up strength and endurance for a better golf game.

So the typical nutrition recommendations that go with weight training for strength will be found in the special golf nutrition that leading experts are recommending to golfers.

This is the direction that the wonderful game of golf has taken and it seems that there is no turning back for any golfer who wants to improve their game. You just have to consider golf nutrition alongside your current golf exercise program.

Ice Golf – Could You Stay Cool When The Heat Is On?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Ice Golf – only the coolest need apply!

Want to try the ultimate golf challenge on a course where you’ll have no trouble staying cool over even the most testing putt? You should consider taking up Ice Golf – the most amazing development that the golf world has seen for decades.

Every year thirty six golfers (or lunatics, depending on your viewpoint) gather in Greenland to play in the World Ice Golf championship. This year’s event takes place in late March and early April. The course is marked out on the ice of the frozen fjord and you can expect icebergs or the occasional polar bear for company! As the organisers say: “if you’ve played on the greens of Europe, then you’ll find the “whites” of Greenland rather special.”

The World Ice Golf Championship was the brainchild of Mr. Arne Neimann, a local resident and hotel proprietor on a small island called Uummannaq, off Greenland’s North West coast. He and a friend designed the first course in 1997 and the sport took off from there.

The world championship is played on the ice in years when the conditions make the ice fields safe and predictable. Players compete over two days and play thirty six holes of stroke play. There is a “warm up” tournament the day before although “cool down” might be a more applicable phrase to describe the effect it has on the golfers. In March, when the world championships are held, the average temperature is minus 13.9 degrees Celsius, but temperatures as low as minus 25 can occur. The dry climate and the strong sunshine can make it seem slightly less cold than that – but not by much!

The organisers also try to keep the golf course open and accessible for several weeks each year for other open icegolf tournaments.

The greens are white and the balls are red. The “whites” are defined by a small wall of snow or by a red line on the ice. Players are allowed to use a scraper to smooth the snow on the white in front of their putt – the only time in golf that a player can legitimately improve the line of his putt. The snow and ice conditions underfoot vary from hole to hole and contestants need to wear polar ice gloves, artic boots and countless layers of clothing. Anti-glare sunglasses are also a good idea.

One contestant a few years ago quipped that “the only hole in one I scored was when one leg disappeared through a seal’s breathing hole in the ice.” There is also a local rule to deal with the unlikely situation of a polar bear interfering with your ball!

The organisers are looking for a new sponsor this year but in previous years the Drambuie liqueur company took the lead. Players and spectators were able to warm themselves by sampling some of the sponsor’s finest product. As always however, even that feature has a twist to it. Rather than ice cubes in the drink, the drink was served in “ice cubes” or glasses carved out of ice to be more exact. Trophies were presented from tables carved out of ice and the scorer’s tent was to be found in an igloo!

If you get the chance to visit Greenland for a game of ice golf then sieze it with both hands. It’ll be the most unique game of your life.

Golf Information Overload?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

You’ve come home from work dead tired. You grab the mail on your way in and notice your new copy of your favorite golfing magazine is in the pile. It puts a slight smile on your face as a picture of you on a couch with an adult beverage suddenly pops into your mind. After getting into your evening uniform (sweats and slippers) you make your way to your favorite reclining device with that drink and a snack in hand to make that vision on the couch a reality. You get all settled with the TV on for background and you finally enter the “Jell Zone” to enjoy that golf magazine and your well-deserved relaxation period.

You go straight to the table of contents to see what is the most interesting article and there it is, swing advice from the winner of the last major tournament. “This is just what I need,” you say to yourself as you flip to the correct page knowing that your club tournament is 2 months away.

The article has one of those swing-sequence photo frames. It has some quotes from other pros. It has a sidebar from the “Top instructor of all time” with his ideas of the perfect swing. The second page of the article is dwarfed by an advertisement for the greatest swing gadget ever created by a human and endorsed by sixteen instruction schools in five countries. The author talks about how he “remade” his swing prior to winning that major but that his best buddy on tour is struggling using the same method and swing guru.

The captions on each of the swing-sequence photos point out the minute details of where parts of the body of the pro are at 10 different positions during the swing and which of those are “technically not correct”.

You don’t want to give up on the article, since you really do need the swing advice, so you go to your dressing room mirror and check a couple of your body parts with some of the pictures in the article while attempting to freeze your swing at the same points as the stop-action photos. “I got it!” you tell yourself when you match a couple of these positions and then practice them outside with your real club. You congratulate yourself and then sit back down in your easy chair to get back to the business of relaxing.

A little later in the evening, you flip to the Golf Channel and instead of the usual tournament from 1994 there is a lesson program from a pro instructor. Lo and behold, he teaches that the move you worked so hard on an hour ago was the prevailing instruction of the 1980’s and has since been proven to be “unreliable in competition”.

You jump out of your chair to go check your favorite golf sites about this guy on the show and it seems that he is everywhere when you do a search for him. A couple of articles you land on say he has the best golf instruction this side of the border and a couple more take pride in picking him apart. The instructor’s own website is loaded with testimonials from his students on how well his program worked for them so you keep surfing for further info.

This leads you to golf discussion boards, blogs, ezines, and untold numbers of websites that say that they have the secret to how to swing correctly. 3 hours later, you wake up from your golf web-surfing trance, realize you missed your bedtime an hour ago, and are now more confused than you were when before you opened that magazine in the mail.

You found more advice than your mind can process on a weekend day let alone a day that you had 3 meetings, your best employee quit, and your boss said something like: “…if you can’t (blah blah blah)…. we’ll find someone who will”.

Ok, that story was a bit exaggerated for most people (truth for me), but the point still stands:

There’s just too much instruction and tips on golf out there and we just don’t know what to do with it all!

And worse, you can find a lot of it that is exactly the opposite from one instructor (or pro) to the other. Many of you are well aware of this fact but still get caught up in something seemingly new that gets printed or posted that could potentially be hazardous to your game. And it’s not just us amateurs that get lost in this maze. Sports psychologists make a pretty penny on their touring professionals teaching them how to “Simplify” their swings and thought processes and “Focus” on what works for them.

So, what should we do about this problem? It’s very simple: just realize that more is not better for golf instruction and to continue to read and listen to golf tips with a very discriminating eye. Over the years, I have now come to the realization that most published golf instruction is designed for the better player and that a tip that works for the 5-handicapper could be a waste of time for a 20-handicapper. Not that it isn’t good advice, but the 20-hdcp should stop looking for more advice and start to work on something that will give him the greatest reduction in score for the time spent.

I know, I know, an article in a major magazine about “practicing good alignment” isn’t going to sell many copies even if it is 90% of all amateur golfer’s biggest problem. But the inescapable fact is, if you really wanted to get better at golf, you should read a basic instruction book like Ben Hogan’s “5 lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.” And, only read one section at a time and work on what was taught in that section until it becomes a regular part of your game. And don’t read any further until you don’t have to think about it to do it correctly.

The other way to go is to pick an instructor or trainer and stick with them with a full set of lessons. You will need to actively ignore any other golf instruction that has the slightest hint of conflict with your lessons. If you run into something your instructor hasn’t taught you about, check with him/her. That is why golf lessons are spaced at least a week apart. Spaced repetition has long been known to be how we humans best learn things. It’s also why you can’t remember a darn thing about a subject 2 weeks after cramming for test on it.

Do the same thing with any other golf instruction that you find also. Don’t be tempted to jump ahead to Chapter 10 and see how to play a draw from a downhill slope because that ain’t gonna help you. O.k., I’m sorry to ruin your fun with your favorite golf magazine. So go ahead and give yourself permission to read and enjoy it again so long as you promise to yourself that you will stick to your plan of really trying to improve by working what you’ve learned one item at a time. Now get back to that couch and finish up that unwinding session you started. And since I’m already up, how’s your drink? Can I get you another one?

Zimmer Durom Cup Lawsuits Is Bad News

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Many poor people who got zimmer durom hip replacement applied in their hip replacement surgeries are finding that there are negative effects that far surpass the natural expectations for recuperation. These unfortunate people are feeling a lot of additive pain for longer periods of time, looking forward to revision operations and enlarged medical costs, and losing revenue by not being able to work at their normal jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is postulating that that their implant is not conceivably malfunctioning and not to blame for the faulty surgical procedures, numerous implant recipients are filing cases against them and receiving settlements.

In October, 2008 Zimmer announced that it had set-aside $47.5 million to compensate for lawsuits they had received. Many MD’s have reservations that the implant is not the problem as the company has publicly stated. As A Matter Of Fact, when Zimmer provided on-line education to docs in order to instruct them what was supposedly more accurate methods for doing the implant surgery, half of the doctors refused to take part. Therefore, the entire state of affairs remains to be bothersome for all patients involved, but none more than the hundreds of people who are expecting revision surgical process because of the issues with their implant not staying snug in the socket.

These suffering unfortunate people definitely merit some assistance and restitution which is why product liability lawyers are suggesting and telling them to start the filing of lawsuits. Durom hip cup implants has been resolving these claims before they go to court. Even So, even if the payoff they are being offered sounds like a fair amount, in most cases patients are deciding too quickly and without provision or allowance being made for repeat issues if they happen down the road. Without waiting to find out what cases are actually going to be worth, individuals might find themselves incurring alot more expenses from their own pocket when more medical issues exist or surface.

For anyone who realizes they do have a claim against Zimmer should start an investigation into it. If you believe you might qualify, you should telephone a lawyer to verify this info. Look for a lawfirm that operates nationwide and that focuses primarily on litigation against faulty medical devices. This law firm has even set up a special section to research and process claims against Zimmer and win substantial settlements for their customers.

If your orthopedic surgeon lets you know that you require a revision surgical process to repair your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, call an attorney immediately.

Improvement of Cricket

Friday, March 27th, 2009

(A) Popularise cricket!

1. Restructure Current test teams.

For Cricket to improve first the quality of the current test teams should be improved. Teams like England and West Indies need to be more competitive. Here are some suggestions:

  • Introduce cricket in schools and colleges.

  • More cricket competitions should be held.

  • Cricket telecasts should be shown on free to air channels.

  • Short forms of the sportlike twenty20 should be played to capture public imagination.

  • Improvement of cricket stadiums and fields.

  • Increase the competiveness of domestic competition.

  • Selection based only on merit NOT on quotas.

  • Encouraging native peoples such as coloureds, Aborigines & Maoris to represent the national squad.

2. Restructuring Current ODI Teams.

It is disheartening for the current ODI status teams to play only during world cups. Such an unfair policy would never see new teams improve. Teams such as Canada, UAE, Scotland, Namibia & Holland should be given permanent ODI status and official tournaments should be played amongst themselves and the 3 bottom ranked test teams. An age limit of 35 yrs should be imposed to encourage youngsters.

Kenya should be given Test Status.

3. League Format

All teams Test and ODI should be ranked in groups of 5. The top 5 will be grp A. Next 5 B and so on. Teams in a particular group are allowed to play with teams in their own group as well as adjacent groups only. eg. Group A cannot play group C teams. [Except Tests & World Cups] Every year, the groups are restructured.

4. Improve quality of Upcoming teams

To ensure that debutants in ODI competitions have an international exposure to cricket before their debut, international tournaments should be held. Here’s what should be done.

  • Two international annual tournaments should be held. Two teams should be selected from each country. 1. Team that has won the domestic competition and 2. A mixed bag composed of the best players of the other teams. This would give budding players the required international exposure. Venues rotated annually.

  • An auxillary domestic competition should be held. At least 5 local teams and 3 international teams (best players) compete in ODI and test matches. Any ODI status country can participate.

  • Teams wishing to improve their game can learn from the following countries on tour:

    • Batting: India, Australia

    • Spin Bowling: India, Sri Lanka

    • Fast Bowling Australia, South Africa

    • Seam Bowling: England, New Zealand.

  • The ICC must have a clear process for teams obtaining ODI and test status. This is what it should do.

To get associate status, local boards should ensure:

    • A cricket education program is introduced in schools

    • Cricket equipment is readily available

    • Adequate playing grounds are available

    • International matches are telecast on free to air TV channels and radio.

    • A well maintained website of the national cricket authority.

To get permanent ODI status teams should:

    • Be placed 1,2 or 3 in the ICC Associate World Cup.

    • Have at least one accredited (C grade –see gradings below) stadium.

    • see pt 4 above.

To get Test Status teams should:

    • Have a waiting period of 5 years after ODI status

    • Have at least a B grade stadium

    • Toured all test playing nations & played first class matches there.

    • Won at least 10 ODI matches against Test nations.

5. Introduction of cutting-edge technology

I feel that technology should be introduced to cricket. This is what cricket needs.

  1. Helmet cams.

  2. Use of tracking technology for LBW decisions.

  3. Use of high frame rate cameras to ascertain run-outs and stumpings.

  4. Use of lasers to compliment run out decisions.

  5. Use of sensors in bails and in the boundary rope to determine if the batsman is out OR hit a 4.

  6. Use of stump microphone to determine close catching decisions.

  7. Use of yellow & red cards to suspend players from the game of repeatly flouting rules.

  8. Use of ‘Eye-Vision’ technology to enhance TV viewing.

  9. Use of ‘True Track’ technology to give the distance the ball carried (6’s)

  10. Use of biodegradable paint to colour the infield and outfield.

6. The ICC.

Here are some reccomendations to the ICC

  1. Change its name to something more representative like Global Cricket Federation (GCF).

  2. No veto rights to member nations.

  3. Be a part of the International Olympic Commitee.

  4. Strive to make Cricket an Olympic sport.

  5. Increase penalties for drug offences & racial abuse.

  6. Play the National Anthem before the start of each match in the World Cup.

  7. Playoff for 3rd place in the WC

  8. Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals given to each player in WC. (like in football)

  9. Have at least 24 teams play in the WC.

  10. For the World Cup international icons should be made chief guests. eg UN Sec. General, Monarch of England, sportstars, premiers etc.

ICC Online

  1. Obtain the domain names like cricket.com, .org, etc.

  2. In the site have detailed info like player and team stats, current news, player profiles, how the sport is played, links to national boards, online telecast of matches, history, facts and stats, rankings etc.

  3. Provide software to calculate the Duckworth Lewis results.

  4. Use latest programming languages like XML, SQL, ASP etc. for website.

  5. Setting up of blogs and bulletin boards.

7. Taking on the Globe.

To encourage more countries to take up cricket, cricket must be marketed well. Teams like Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore have a good program and must be encouraged to obtain ODI status.

For cricket to succeed regional sporting giants should be given top priority. These countries are regional giants and act like a catalyst to spread the sport to neighbouring countries. The countries are: China, USA, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Nigeria Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morrocco, Sweden, Fiji, Argentina and Brazil.

Have a brand ambassador for cricket. People who know about the sport and are internationally famous should be selected. Names such as Russel Crowe, Shaggy, Christian Vieri (footballer ITALY) make good ambassadors.

Cricket should be introduced equally to all races and women should also be encouraged to take up the sport.

Marketing Blitz

If I were the president of the ICC, this is what I would do to promote the sport in a country.

  • See that major sport shops stock up cricket gear.

  • Pitches are readily available.

  • Cricket is shown on free to air channels.

  • A cricket program is introduced in schools and universities.

  • Well known directors should be requested to make cricket themed movies starring well known actors.

  • Introducing the sport to famous sportmen, politicians, actors, directors, media personalities, businessmen and making them enjoy the sport.

  • The next step would have a advertising blitz in famous newspapers, magazines, top internet sites, TV, radio. The ads should be run for a month or so. Promos showing the country’s top personalities supporting cricket should be aired. _ Nothing like having the country’s premier in the promo.

  • The marketing blitz should cummulated with top international teams playing along with the host nation in a tournament.

(B) Rules that have to be changed:

1) Elimination of the Leg-bye rule.

The Lb rule is pretty unfair to the bowler. By elimination such a rule would allow the batsman to play at the ball, instead of getting runs of the deflection of his clothing.

2) Direct Hit on the stump renders the ball dead.

At present if a fielder hits the stumps directly when the batsman is taking a run & he is safe, if it deflects of it, the batsman can run overthrows (extra runs). By enabling the ball ‘dead’ it would encourage the fielders to hit the stumps more often. If the batsman ran after this, the extra runs would be overruled.

3) Leg-side LBW decision

At present, if the ball is pitched outside the leg-stump, but is a clear LBW decision, the batsman is not out. Due to advances in technology today, we can predict an LBW. Hence LBW decisions should be simplified by this method, if the trajectory appears to hit the stump the Batsman is OUT.

4) Correct Nomenclature

Terms such as leg-spin and off-spin are outdated. Better terms would be wrist spin and finger spin.

(C) Accredation to stadiums

The ICC must start rating stadiums. The better the rating of the stadium more matches it is allowed to hold. Here are my parameters. Points are shown alongside in y/n format.

Lights 40/5

Capacity (in 1000’s)

Pitch invasion history? 0/20

Betting House Taking a Risk: What You Need to Know about the Pastimes Gambling Fans Enjoying Taking Part in

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Assuming that you haven’t familiarized yourself with gaming establishment games of luck, please read on…

Most commonly a betting hall is a house that focuses on wagering. Paying Customers will hopefully wager by having a bash at slot machines or alternate games of luck. Gambling saloon games usually include mathematically determined probabilities built in which guarantee the gaming establishment grasps on to its upper hand above the gambling devotees.

Far too many gaming hall games can encourage you to become obsessed very swiftly. Let’s scrutinize the quintessential one-armed-bandit, a cash operated instrument with 3 or more discs that orbit if a bar on its flank is started. This appliance usually remunerates in accordance with a combination of symbols observable on the display of the appliance. Regrettably, betting hall games proffer an appearance of having the upper hand, thereby conning the gambler – the punter is presented alternatives, but actually these can never truly remove the client’s long term handicap. That is induced by the betting saloon never refunding the entire wager as expected. This systematic method is recurrently noticeable in acclaimed casino games like five-card stud poker, dice games, roulette or blackjack. Seven card stud is genuinely an immensely popular casino pastime. The players, playing with partially obscured hands, will wager into a principal pot that is then given to the prevailing gamer blessed with the leading set of cards. (And as eveyone knows, the best bluff can easily win)

slot casino

Comparable to stud poker, blackjack is also a very fashionable casino pastime. A substantial chunk of its reputation is due to its particular mix of chance and intelligence & choice making, as well as a practise titled “counting”. This is an approach through which gamblers may actually shift the odds of the game to their personal profit by both wagering & strategy opetations established on the cards shown.

“Craps” is the name of a famous pastime using the throw of 2 dice. Clients must make bets on the outcome of of 1 spin, or on a series of cycles of two dice. Very much unlike blackjack, there’s no probable sustainable killer tactics players could play on to beat the odds.

Roulette is another well-known game of chance – a croupier whirls a roulette wheel that contains a set of exactly 37 (classical roulette) or thirty-eight (as in American or Vegas roulette) separately marked chambers in which a tossed ball will eventually settle, which establishes the final winning number as well as the supplemental combinations. Now if our gamester has placed a chip on a specific number and is successful meaning she is actually successful, the premium will be thirty five to 1, the initial pledge is repaid. Therefore in total it is multiplied by a factor of thirty-six.

Do your best to stay emphatically guarded as such betting room games are massively habituating. Innumerable lives have indisputably been wrecked by uncontrolled gambling and whereas it can be enjoyable, seek to control your gaming.
