The Crooked Straight

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

poker hands often end up with showdowns, where one or more players call another player’s bet. A bettor who is called is obligated to show their poker hand. Those doing the calling, who may have losing hands, can simply muck their hands rather than show.

However, it is not always wise to immediately muck your hand if you think you’ve lost. Imagine this scenario, which happened during a low-limit game at a local card room. A gentleman player had a pocket 8s, and completed a set on the flop, which came 4-7-8. Everyone checked, except one lady who bet. The gentleman raised, and she called.

The turn brought an Ace, the lady checked, the gentleman bet, and she called. The river card was a 9. Now there was a straight possibility out there. This time the lady bet, and the gentleman paused, giving it some thought before calling the bet. He looked at his opponent, and asked, “Did you make the straight?” and the lady nodded yes. He threw his pocket 8s into the muck.

The lady was ready to toss hers too, when another player at the table objected, stating that she was obligated to show her cards since she had been called. She turned over 6-9, showing only a busted straight, and she acted befuddled as though she really thought she had made the straight. Was this a deliberate act or was the lady truly confused? No one will ever know.

Because the gentleman had mucked his winning poker online hand after calling her bet, the house declared the lady the winner. Happily, this was a small pot, so there was not real reason to engage in heated argument over it. However, it does teach a valuable lesson – make sure you actually see you are beaten before mucking your hand!
