Hooked: a Look at Fishing
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009A great means to relax is to obtain a rod, a reel, some bait, and go fishing, and this article introduces the different styles of fishing in Great Britain. It’s a great way to get outdoors, and there is a growing fishing society in England with many fishing clubs and competitions attended by a large number of fishing fantatics.
So how to fish? Well you need a fishing rod, a fishing reel, some fishing bait, and plenty of patience! Where you live in the UK will influence the kind of angling you’ll be involved in. There’s game fishing which requires catching bigger fish, often as a contest, and then there’s coarse fishing which can be done in lakes, rivers and on the coast. It’s better to take up the type of fishing that doesn’t involve you putting in the miles – best to have a stream or lake close by that you can get to at a moment’s notice – as the beauty of fishing is the fact it’s a place you can go to unwind.
Coarse fishing is where you fish for types of fresh water fish other than game fish. It’s particularly popular in England and mainland Europe. The sorts of fish you can find on your hook when coarse fishing include pike, dace, roach, tench and bream amongst many others. For coarse fishing, you will require a typical fishing rod, a fishing reel, possibly an angling tripod (to balance the fishing rod), some groundbait, some keepnets and fishing landing nets.
Big-game fishing is a kind of recreational angling, pinpointing large fish well-known for their sporting qualities, like marlin. Having said that, game fishing also includes trout and salmon.
Fishing tackle is an important component of fishing. Bait is applied to invite fish to the secret hook. Traditionally, nightcrawlers, insects and smaller fish are used for this function. Fishermen have also begun fake plastic tackle and, more recently, electronic lures, to lure fish. Reports show that natural tackle like maggots are more accepted by fish and so more effective.
Fishing is particularly popular in the spring and summer months when the temperature is warmer and the days longer, and nighttime fishing isn’t so perishingly cold. Fishing can be as low-priced as you want. Just get a a rod, a fishing reel, some fishing bait, a license, and off you go.
