What Is a Camisole?
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009A camisole, also known as a cami, is an article of women’s clothing that is designed to be worn under another garment such as a sweater or blazer. Some can also be worn alone, but traditionally they are worn as an undergarment. They are sleeveless, typically having spaghetti straps, and they are similar to a tank top. The main difference between a camisole and a tank top is that typically the camisole is usually more refined in appearance and has delicate details. A tank top also usually has a scoop neckline while a camisole is straight across.
Camisoles are available in a wide variety of styles. Many feature built-in bras. The built-in bra is often a simple shelf style, but some camis do have built-in underwire bras. Many underwire camisoles feature wider straps also and are designed with larger busted women in mind. Backless or low-back camisoles are also available and are popular for wearing under dresses with an open or low-cut back. Some camisoles also have body shaping features. In addition to the various structural features that can be found in camis, there are also several different design styles. Plain, simple designs are excellent for day to day use under clothing. A simple cami can make a low-cut blouse appropriate for wearing to work by concealing cleavage. More ornate, lacy camisoles are more appropriate for evening wear and can be worn alone to create a feminine, sexy appearance. While camisoles are made from a wide variety of fabrics, cotton and cotton blends are the most common. Other frequently used materials include silk, nylon, and polyester.
With the wide variety of camisoles available in today’s market, they have become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Regardless of your personal fashion sense, there is certainly a cami to fit your style!
