“Never Leave Candles Unattended,” Home Insurance Customers Urged

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Home emergency cover customers have been warned to never light candles and then leave them unattended.Speaking to the Sentinel, Keith Stubbs, the manager of Newcastle Fire Station, also said such decorations should be kept in proper holders and not just left to stand on top of other surfaces. He made his comments after a family escaped from a blazing property in Knutton.Mr Stubbs explained a candle had been lit in the home and the residents had fallen asleep, adding it was “lucky” the house had fire alarms installed.Fire risks associated with leaving a candle burning have been stressed to home insurance policy holders after three people escaped a house that was filled with smoke. The Echo reported how the house had to be ventilated by firefighters after a candle burned down to its holder, filling the place with smoke while a woman and two children slept. One member of the family woke up in time, enabling all of them to escape their house in Canvey. The government’s Fire Kills campaign gives information on how to use candles safely.People are advised to extinguish them when they leave the room and not place them near items such as cards that may catch fire.It is also dangerous to put candles on a Christmas tree.Fairy lights are another hazard and should not be left plugged in when the occupants leave or retire to bed. They can also cause material such as paper to catch fire.

Whoa Boy! What a Vacation!

Just got back from a fantastic vacation on the pristine beaches of Jamaica’s Ocho Rios, and we have already planned to go there for our winter vacation. We stayed at the Beaches Boscobel Resort and Golf Club and the kids loved every minute of it. They had a blast at Pirates Island Water Park with its Aqua Play area called Treasure Isle and the dozen or so slides meant of kids of all ages. I thought the sea creature themed décor in the play area was cute. The children felt that the speed slide was a perfect scream and we had to drag them away when it was time for lunch.

Since the hotel also had a supervised Kids Camp, we could leave them to enjoy their holiday with others of their age and settle down to a day of sun worship on the pristine beaches or by the pool. The swim-up bar made the pool my husband’s first choice though games of beach volleyball with other guests on the pristine beaches were equally attractive. The sweetest memory I have is one of sharing a crumbled cookie that my daughter had saved for me, after spending the afternoon baking “zillions” of cookies with the Cookie Monster, Mr. Baker from the bakery and “lots of other girls and boys” (in her words). You bet she has photos to prove that she did bake cookies and meet Abby Cadabby and Zoe, her pals from Sesame Street to show her friends in school.

People-watching is my favorite past time and I have to say it – the sugary sand pristine beaches in Ocho Rios seem to be a favorite playground of Americans, Canadians, Europeans, and the occasional group of Japanese tourists.

Windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving – we tried them all but my favorite was the hydrobike. I am going to amaze my friends with tales of my croquet playing evenings and show off my primped and polished skin with its lovely tan, thanks to those Red Lane Spa treatments. Now do you understand why I want to book my winter vacation tickets right away?
