Are You Too Busy To Write? No Excuses – Get the Writing Habit

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

You want to write a book. You know you have great information you want to share with your readers. You talk to your friends and colleagues all the time about your great book. You know your topic backwards and forwards. You think about it in your sleep… Yet, when you sit down to write about it the words don’t always flow.

All of the sudden you are stuck. “Why?” you ask yourself. “Why can’t I write my
book?”

You have all sorts of excuses. The Number One Excuse is, “I’m too busy.” Or some
variation of that theme. That is no excuse. If you really, really want to write your
great book then you WILL find the time no matter what.

Here are some of the REAL reasons why you can’t write your book.

  1. Not enough motivation. You have spurts of it here and there, but not
enough to sit down for an hour and write and develop a regular writing schedule.
  2. No passionate feeling. You must have to have a strong yearning to
write: Like a feeling of mild ecstasy. Without this feeling you are unable to write
    regularly.
  3. You have doubts. You don’t believe in yourself or your book. Oh,
you pretend in front of your colleagues that you have this great book to write. And
maybe you do, but you have doubts once you sit down to write and your mind goes
    blank.
  4. No goals. No deadlines. No action plan.
  5. Writer’s block. This happens because you are experiencing numbers
1-4 above. There is something on your mind that is preventing you from writing. li>

What if a publisher gave you an advance and a deadline?

Now you have the motivation and passion that you need to do it. You would not say
you are too busy. “Too busy” is an excuse. As you are writing you might become
doubtful, yet somehow you would find a way to overcome that feeling by calling a
knowledgeable colleague, researching, attend writing seminars, etc. You certainly
will develop an action plan to assure that you finish your book by the deadline.

There definitely will be times in your life that you must stop writing for awhile: an
illness in the family, a wedding or special event that you must plan, a new job, and
so on. Yet, somehow I believe that if your publisher is expecting your book by a
specific date that you will find the time to do it. It will be stressful, but you will do
it.

Here is the secret to your writing success.

Get in the habit of writing daily. Write everyday at the same time no matter what.
Set up an action plan. In your appointment book block out the time you will write.
In other words make an appointment with yourself to write. Write everyday even if it
is only for 10 minutes on certain days. Begin writing short 250-500 word articles to
submit to e-zines. Write. Write. Write. In 30-45 days you will be addicted to
writing your great book everyday.
